"Looking for Alaska" Unit Outline
John Green’s Looking for Alaska is taught in many classrooms nationwide. The novel centers around a junior in high school who has transferred to a new school, complete with a new culture he needs to acclimate to. The novel poses many philosophical questions to prompt students’ analytical thought. Literarily, it includes excellent examples of symbolism, allusion, and foreshadowing. Looking for Alaska also provides a wonderful opportunity for interdisciplinary connections--with references to many historical and political figures. The following is a unit outline, designed for a freshman English course.
This unit outline provides teachers with three lesson plan suggestions, a written assignment, and a summative exam, along with other resources that compliment the unit outline. It is, however, important that educators bringing this unit outline into their classrooms modify the resources to make them most applicable to their classrooms and curriculums.
